Earth Day

         Earth Day is the day that intends to appreciate for and inspire awareness of the earth’s environment. There are two earth days during the year. The traditional earth day which was found by a peace activist named John McConnell in 1969 is celebrated on the March equinox each year. The other earth year is the one that we usually celebrate on April 22^nd. It was found by an American politician named Gaylord Nelson in the late 1960s. Earth Day is usually held in spring in the Northern Hemisphere and in autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.

        Climate change is one of the main topics that people around the world have been talking about in these several years. During these years, there have been many natural disasters happening around the world. The great examples should be the hurricane Katrina happened in New Orleans two years ago and the massive snowstorms that happened in the Northern China at the beginning of this year. These kind of natural disasters happen due to the climate change. Therefore, Earth Day is the day that reminds people to protect our environment.

         On April, there are usually many events celebrating the Earth Day. There was an event called Eco-Fest held in Chico State University last Saturday. This event was held by the CSU Chico's Environmental Action and Resource Center and the purpose of having this event is to raise the awareness about the environment. There were many booths explaining how the climate change damages our planet. Also, we were able to get some information about the Earth Day and what is happening in the global environment from those booths. The event also brought the participants some cross-cultural music performances so that it did not make the event too boring. There are also two main events for Earth Day in Chico, California. One was held last Saturday in Bidwell Park in the morning and the other event will be held in Bidwell Park on 3^rd May. The purpose of making those events is to educate the people to focus on the environmental problem.

       Global warming is the hottest topic around the world right now. Due to the damage of the ozone layer, the average temperature of our planet has been raising. Earth Day is the day that makes people to concern about this planet. In fact, there are many organizations around the world now teaching people protect the environment, such as Green Peace. Also, there are many products that help to protect the environment, such as the energy save light bulb. Therefore, protecting the environment is everybody’s responsibility. We all should participate in it.
