Thinking to the past is always great, but sometimes it also harms us

February 25, 2008 / by howing1984

Do you sometimes think to the past moment? I think everybody does, especially for the happy moments that we have experienced before. However, does anyone think that this can also harm people? It's true. As my article topic says, thinking to the past is always great, but sometimes it harms us. Why can the past happy moment harm us? Sometimes people just want to stay in the past memory because this memory can make them happy. They don't want to face the current situation they're having. When I think of this idea, Masuji Ono just comes out to my brain. Masuji Ono is the main character of Kazuo Ishiguro's novel An Artist of the Floating World. Mr. Ono used to be a respectful artist before the war. After Japan lost the war, everything had been changed. However, Mr. Ono is still stunk to the past. The past memory just makes him stay in the old day even though the world has already moved forward.

Before the war, Masuji Ono was a respectful artist. Many people looked up to him and he was always proud of himself. “…I was not yet serving on the arts committee of the State Department, but I had many personal links there and was already being consulted frequently on maters on policy” (Ishiguro P.63). In the novel, it also mentions an establishment named Migi-Hidari. This is the place that Mr. Ono usually drank with Kuroda, his most gifted purple, and some other artists. Therefore, Migi-Hidari was the establishment that he was proud to be an artist. At that moment, he was very looked up by Kuroda. However, he regrets that after the end of the war. Matsuda, one of his old teachers, reminded him that things cannot last forever. However, Mr. Ono has been still stuck to the past since he cannot accept Japan lost the war and his artist is no longer be respected in the new society. Actually, later on, Mr. Ono comes to realize that he must forget the past and move on with the world. “…there are some…who believe my career to have been a negative influence.  An influence now best erased and forgotten” (Ishiguro P.123). The past memory just memory just makes him so regret. He prefers that he did not have Kuroda this purple after the war since he regrets for the Kuroda's shoulder injured since he thinks that was his fault. He is not able to change what has happened on Kuroda; therefore, he has to live with this consequence.

Masuji Ono actually wants to move forward. However, his moving is kind of slow because the past moment is fabulous. He was a respectful artist before the war, but his artist works are not respected anymore after the war. He just cannot accept this fact. Even though there was a great moment in the past, the past moment also makes me feel regret. The obvious case is the injury of his purple Kuroda's shoulder during the war. Also, the past moment is also the main element that makes him move on slowly. In my opinion, Masuji Ono should move forward with the world. Even though the past was great, he has to realize that those moments are gone. They don't exist anymore. He has to accept this fact and face the current situation he has. He can sometimes think back the moments he was pleasure, but he should not be stuck in it since it just makes him move slowly.
